On crazy hats

British ladies have been well-known for wearing hats on all sorts of traditional events for many years. I’m definitely not British nor do I have any British blood running in my family (as far as I know…), but I still have a strange affection towards this hat-wearing habit. Maybe it’s because Israelis basically have no dress code whatsoever, that this sort of tradition appeals to me, or maybe it’s because of the quirky and crazy hat designs that can be seen on these events. Some of them might puzzle you, others will make you smile, but all of them are bound to get your attention. It’s quite amazing how much work and creativity can be put into a hat!
One such even that is taking place these days is The Royal Ascot, one of the most famous horse-racing venues in Europe and it brought forth these lovely ladies who are not hesitant to rock some eccentric head-wear.

הנשים הבריטיות ידועות בעבור הרגלי חבישת הכובעים שלהם באירועים מסורתיים במשך שנים רבות. אני בהחלט לא בריטית וגם אין לי שורשים בריטים ככל הידוע לי, ולמרות זאת, יש לי חיבה יתרה למסורת הכובעים הזאת. ייתכן שזה בגלל שבישראל לא ממש קיים קוד לבוש רשמי כלשהו, או אולי בגלל העיצובים המוזרים והמשוגעים שניתן לראות באירועים מסוג זה. חלקם יעוררו בכם תמיהה, אחרים יגרמו לכם לחייך, אבל מה שבטוח – לא תוכלו להתעלם מהם. די מדהים בעיניי כמה עבודה ויצירתיות אפשר להשקיע בכובע אחד! אחד האירועים מסוג זה הוא הרויאל אסקוט, אחד ממפגשי המירוצים הידועים ביותר באירופה, המתקיים בימים אלה ממש ומהווה הזדמנות פז לגבירות הבריטיות הענוגות לחבוש את כובעיהם יוצאי הדופן.

On the milder side of head-wear, hats have definitely been present in many fashionistas’ wardrobes in the last couple of years and moving on to this spring/summer season as well. From floppy felt hats to smaller, 80s retro hats, they seem to be regaining their fame. When styled properly, donning a hat can make an outfit super-chic. Unfortunately, I lack the guts to wear one myself (I just feel really strange going to work wearing a hat, you know?), so I just enjoy admiring them from afar. Here are some of my Royal Ascot personal favorites:

בנימה “רגועה” יותר, אפשר לומר שכובעים בהחלט הראו נוכחות במלתחות של פאשניסטות בשנתיים האחרונות והמגמה ממשיכה גם לתוך עונת האביב/קיץ הנוכחית. החל מכובעים רחבי שוליים ועד כובעים קטנים בסגנון שנות השמונים, נראה שהם חוזרים לימי הזוהר שלהם. הוספת כובע למראה מסוגנן היטב עשויה בהחלט להוסיף למדד השיק. לצערי, אין לי את האומץ לעטות אחד על עצמי (אני פשוט לא רואה את עצמי יושבת במשרד עם כובע על הראש), ולכן אני מסתפקת בלהעריץ אותם מרחוק. הנה כמה מהכובעים האהובים עליי מהרויאל אסקוט:

Hot as a teapot

While the weatherman claims with confidence the first official day of summer will only come on Friday, the heat that washes over me every time I leave an air-conditioned space begs to differ. And as we know, when the temperatures rise, the layers come off. Dresses are definitely a summer must have (as much as I hate the expression “must-have”), even more so in the humid Israeli summer. Admittedly, this teapot dress isn’t a classic summer dress – with a dark color, the fabric isn’t very light-weight and it even has a collar – I can definitely see myself wearing it with some opaque tights and a pair of ankle boots. Nevertheless, it translates well into wearing in warm weather, it has a delicate fabric and the collar is wide enough so it allows the skin to breathe.

Regarding the design, this is one of my favorite dresses at the moment and I can’t stop wearing it. It reminds me of Alice in wonderland, because of its vintage-y look as well as the teapot print, which is somewhat absurd, not unlike the strange and wonderful story of Alice. Other than its print, I also love the over-sized collar and the flattering A-shape of the dress. Since this dress is somewhat of a statement item, I didn’t add any other accessories, just paired it with my lovely Myka flats (I know, I know, you’re tired of seeing them already) and the purple satchel to complete the goody-two-shoes look.

בזמן שדני רופ ושות’ טוענים בבטחה שהיום הרשמי הראשון של הקיץ יהיה רק ביום שישי, גלי החום שמקדמים את פניי בכל פעם שאני נמצאת במקום לא ממוזג חולקים על דבריו. וכידוע, כשהטמפרטורות עולות, השכבות יורדות. אין ספק ששמלות הן פריט חובה לקיץ (אם כי אני לא מחבבת את המונח “פריט חובה”), ובמיוחד לקיץ הישראלי הלח והחם. אמנם, שמלת הקומקומים הנ”ל איננה שמלת קיץ קלאסית – היא בעלת צבע כהה, לא עשויה בד מתנפנף וקליל ואפילו יש לה צווארון – ואני לגמרי יכולה לראות את עצמי לובשת אותה עם גרבונים אטומים וזוג מגפונים חמודים. למרות כל זאת, היא מיתרגמת היטב גם ללבישה בקיץ, הבד שלה נעים ולא מעיק והצווארון העגול מאפשר מספיק מרחב בשביל שהעור ינשום.

בנוגע לעיצוב, מדובר באחת השמלות האהובות עליי כרגע ואני לובשת אותה לעייפה. היא מזכירה לי את אליס בארץ הפלאות, גם בגלל המראה הוינטג’י שלה וגם בגלל הדפס הקומקומים שיש בו משהו אבסורדי, כמו בסיפור המוזר והנפלא של אליס. מלבד ההדפס ההומוריסטי, אני מאוד אוהבת גם את הצווארון הגדול (בכלל, בחורף האחרון פיתחתי חיבה חתרה לצווארונים) ואת גזרת ה-A המחמיאה. כיוון שהשמלה מאוד בולטת בפני עצמה, לא הוספתי כמעט כלום מבחינת אקססוריז, רק את הנעליים העדינות מ-Myka (כן, אני יודעת שכבר נמאס לראות אותן פה) ואת התיק הסגול שהתאים למראה הילדה-טובה-ירושלים.

Da Bomb(er)

Like many other trends, I was a bit reluctant about bomber jackets. It looked at best too rough and manly, and at worst like something Will Smith use to wear as the fresh prince. However, like in almost any other case, it very much depends on how and what you wear it with – there are many versions of the bomber jacket, and a lot of options to style it. I’ve seen a few bloggers that gave different interpretations to this trend, but the one I loved the most was the lovely Elle Frost, who even gave a few options of her own and this look was my personal favorite.

Personally, wearing a bomber is a double challenge, because I have a relatively wide upper body, so wearing a puffy jacket with a masculine shape might create a “lolly-pop” silhouette – yummy, but not so flattering. This is one reason why I chose this particular jacket which has a more fitted shape and is also a bit shorter, so it doesn’t hide the waist line. The floral print is another spring/summer fun trend and it gives another feminine touch. It’s important to emphasize – I have nothing against masculine/androgynous looks, the opposite is true, I just don’t particularly like it on myself for the aforementioned reasons.

In addition, I think this look gives a fun idea on how to add some color to a look based on a simple black dress – colorful accessories and a cool bomber and you’re good to go. And the icing on the cake – an owl!

כמו עם טרנדים רבים אחרים, גם מטרנד ה-bomber jacket (או בתרגום חופשי “מעיל טייסים”) הסתייגתי בתחילה. הוא היה נראה לי במקרה הטוב גברי וגס מדי, ובמקרה הרע כמו משהו שוויל סמית היה לובש בנסיך המדליק מבל אייר. אבל, כמו בכל מקרה אחר כמעט, זה מאוד תלוי מה ואיך לובשים – יש המון גרסאות למעיל הטייסים, ויש המון אופציות לסגנן אותו. ראיתי כמה בלוגריות שנתנו פרשנויות שונות למראה, אבל זו שמצאה חן בעיניי במיוחד הייתה אל פרוסט המהממת, שגם בתוך הבלוג שלה נתנה כמה אופציות, אך המראה הזה היה אהוב עליי במיוחד.

עבורי, ללבוש מעיל טייסים מהווה אתגר כפול, משום שפלג הגוף העליון שלי רחב יחסית ולכן ללבוש ז’קט נפוח בגזרה גברית עלול ליצור מראה של “סוכריה על מקל” – טעים, אבל לא מחמיא. לכן בחרתי את הז’קט הנ”ל, בעל גזרה קרובה לגוף וקצרה יחסית שמדגישה את המותניים. ההדפס הפרחוני על הז’קט משלב עוד טרנד כיפי של עונת האביב/קיץ ונותן עוד טאץ’ נשי לז’קט הגברי. חשוב לי להדגיש – אין לי שום דבר נגד מראה גברי/אנדרוגיני, להיפך, זה יכול להיות סופר שיק, אני פשוט פחות אוהבת אותו על עצמי מהסיבות שצוינו לעיל.
בנוסף לכל, המראה הזה הוא גם דרך נהדרת להוסיף צבעוניות ועניין לשמלה שחורה פשוטה – עם אקססוריז צבעוניים וז’קט מגניב, המראה שודרג מבייסיק למשהו מעניין שעושה שמח בעיניים. והדובדבן שבקצפת – ינשוף!

Looking for inspiration

A confession is in order – I’ve been feeling a little out of it lately, and when I say “it”, I mean the blog. That’s just the way it is, blogging is sometimes an ungrateful “job” – you put in a lot of time and effort with getting little or no return at all. It’s not my intention to whine about how hard it is being a blogger, because first and foremost it’s something I do for fun; However, I do want to be honest. Despite all of this, the best incentive is of course the feedback and support I get from my followers/readers. You may not have noticed my absence at all, but I do feel somewhat responsible at least for a tiny fraction of your online entertainment consumption, so for that, I apologize.

Since I was feeling a bit discouraged, I thought about doing something different in order to freshen things up. I wanted to tell you about my latest musical discovery – a band called HAIM, which consists of three sisters and a drummer. I heard their great song “falling” totally by chance on VH1 (Yes, TV music channels still exist!) and was immediately turned on to it. It’s not only a super cool track, but also has a super cool video, which even provides some fashion inspiration. Naturally, you’ll decide for yourselves, but just in case you want some reasons to spend (at least) 4:11 minutes of your life on this band, here is why I think you should:

1. They’re called Haim! Haim is a relatively common Israeli name, and it’s the sisters’ family name, simply meaning “life”
2. Your music savvy friends will thank you for introducing it to them.
3. It’s not often I hear a song that makes me feel nostalgic but is also innovative and original at the same time. “Falling” is that kind of song.
4. The combination of – Short-shorts, jackets, long straight hair and a hat.

עליי להתוודות – לאחרונה אני מרגישה די חסרת השראה, במיוחד בכל הנוגע לבלוג. אין מה לעשות, לתחזק בלוג זו “עבודה” לא מתגמלת לעתים – משקיעים הרבה זמן ומאמץ, מבלי לקבל תמורה פעמים רבות. אין לי כוונה להתמרמר או להתלונן על כמה קשה להיות בלוגריות, כי בראש ובראשונה זה משהו שאני עוסקת בו בשביל הכיף; אבל כן חשוב לי להיות כנה. למרות כל זה, אין ספק שהתמריץ הכי טוב להמשיך ולהשקיע הוא התגובות החמות והתמיכה שאני מקבלת מהעוקבים/הקוראים של הבלוג. ייתכן שבכלל לא הרגשתם בהיעדרי, אבל אני עדיין מרגישה אחראית במידת-מה לפחות לשבריר קטנטן מצריכת הבידור המקוונת שלכם, ולכן אני מתנצלת.
כיוון שהרגשתי מעט חסרת חשק, החלטתי לגוון קצת בניסיון לרענן את הבלוג ובתוך כך גם את עצמי. החלטתי לספר לכם על התגלית המוזיקלית האחרונה שלי – להקת HAIM (כן, כן, חיים!) המורכבת משלוש אחיות ומתופף. שמעתי את השיר שלהן “falling” לגמרי במקרה ב-VH1 (מסתבר שערוצי מוזיקה עדיין קיימים) ומיד נדלקתי עליו. מדובר לא רק בשיר מגניב לאללה, אלא גם בקליף מהמם ואפילו שיקי. מן הסתם, תחליטו בעצמכם, אבל אם אתן רוצות כמה סיבות לבלות (לפחות) 4 דקות ו-11 שניות בהאזנה ללהקה, קבלו:

1. בגלל השם שלהן! אמנם אין לזה את אותה קונוטציה באנגלית כמו שיש לזה בעברית, אבל כמה גאוני זה לקרוא ללהקה “חיים”.
2. חבריכם אניני הטעם המוזיקלי יודו לכם על שהכרתם להם את הלהקה.
3. לא יוצא לי לעתים קרובות לשמוע שיר שגם מעורר תחושה נוסטלגית, אבל עדייו חדשני ומקורי בעת ובעונה אחת. “falling” הוא שיר כזה.
4. השילוב של שורטס קצרצרים, ז’קט, שיער חלק וארוך וכובע
